AceShowbiz - ABC has confirmed the renewal of two of its popular comedies, Scrubs and Shifting Gears, for the 2026-27 television season. Both series, produced by 20th Television, have demonstrated strong performance on the network’s Wednesday lineup throughout the current year.
The multi-camera sitcom Shifting Gears, starring Tim Allen and Kat Dennings, will return for its third season in 2026-27. The show aired during the first half of this season and emerged as ABC’s most-watched comedy in linear ratings, averaging 5.4 million viewers with seven days of DVR playback. When factoring in streaming platforms, the average viewership per episode grows to about 7 million after one week.
The revival of Scrubs premiered in the spring and will receive a second season. It attracted an impressive audience of 9 million cross-platform viewers within the first seven days and increased to 11 million viewers in Nielsen’s 35-day all-platform ratings. In terms of linear ratings alone, Scrubs stood out as ABC’s number one comedy among adults aged 18-49 this season.
With these renewals, ABC has now secured new seasons for all but one of its current scripted shows. The only exception is the first-year drama R.J. Decker, which remains undecided. Previously, the network renewed several notable series including 911, 911: Nashville, Abbott Elementary, Grey’s Anatomy, High Potential, The Rookie, and Will Trent.
Tim Allen serves as an executive producer on Shifting Gears, alongside Michelle Nader, Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements, Richard Baker, Rick Messina, John Pasquin, Jim Patterson, Bob Daily, and John Amodeo. Kat Dennings also holds a producer credit on the series.
Meanwhile, Scrubs’ revival is executive produced by its creator Bill Lawrence and showrunner Aseem Batra. The production team includes Jeff Ingold and Liza Katzer from Lawrence’s Doozer Productions, as well as lead actors Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and Sarah Chalke, along with Randall Keenan Winston.
These renewals underscore ABC’s commitment to maintaining a strong comedy lineup as it prepares for the 2026-27 season. Both Scrubs and Shifting Gears have proven their appeal with solid ratings and dedicated fanbases, securing their spots in the network’s future programming slate.
