AceShowbiz - Eminem opened the show with a rendition of "Houdini", the lead single from his album "The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grace)". Surrounded by a crew of similarly-clad Eminems, complete with black tees and bleached hair, he referenced his iconic 2000 performance where he led a parade of look-alikes.
The performance included nods to his 2003 single "Without Me", providing a meta callback to his earlier work. Eminem later returned for a heartfelt rendition of "Somebody Save Me" with pre-recorded footage of Jelly Roll, who was unable to attend in person.
Eminem's return to the VMA stage marked his first appearance since 2022 and tied him with Peter Gabriel for the most wins by a solo male artist in VMA history. He received eight nominations this year, including video of the year, best hip-hop and most iconic performance for his legendary 2000 medley of "The Real Slim Shady" and "The Way I Am".
The rapper's performance came just a day after announcing the Expanded Mourner's Edition of "The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grace)". Describing it as a concept album, Eminem encouraged fans to listen to the songs in order for them to make sense.
Other notable performers at the VMAs included Anitta, Karol G, LL Cool J, Shawn Mendes, Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, GloRilla, Camila Cabello, Rauw Alejandro, Halsey, Lenny Kravitz and Blackpink's Lisa. Katy Perry was honored with the video vanguard award, and Megan Thee Stallion hosted the event.
