Anitta
Larissa de Macedo Machado, known globally as Anitta, emerged from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro to become one of Brazil's most formidable and internationally recognized pop exports. A singer, songwriter, dancer, actress, and savvy businesswoman, she carved a unique path by blending Brazilian funk, pop, and a multitude of other genres, crafting a vibrant and commercially successful career that transcended linguistic and cultural borders. Her rise to national fame was cemented with the 2013 hit "Show das Poderosas," a song that became an anthem and announced her as a major new force in Latin music.
Born on March 30, 1993, in the Honório Gurgel neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, Anitta grew up influenced by a wide range of musical styles, from Brazilian pagode and samba to American pop and R&B. She began singing in church and, determined to pursue music professionally, started posting covers on YouTube in her late teens. Her persistence led to a meeting with producer and hitmaker Batutinha, which resulted in her self-titled debut album in 2013. The album's lead single, "Show das Poderosas," was a phenomenon, topping charts in Brazil and earning her a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Brazilian Song. This success established her signature style: catchy melodies, empowered lyrics, and high-energy performances.
Anitta's career continued on an upward trajectory with subsequent albums like "Ritmo Perfeito" (2014) and "Bang" (2015), the latter containing the massive hit "Bang" featuring Projota. She strategically expanded her reach through high-profile collaborations, working with major Latin artists like Maluma on "Sim ou Não" and J Balvin on "Ginza." Her ambition, however, stretched far beyond the Lusophone and Hispanic markets. In 2017, she signed a management deal with Shakira's former manager and began a concerted push for global recognition, releasing multilingual tracks and collaborating with international stars such as Major Lazer, Snoop Dogg, and Caetano Veloso.
A pivotal moment in her international breakthrough came with the 2019 single "Me Gusta," featuring Cardi B and Myke Towers, which garnered massive streaming numbers. She further solidified her global presence with the 2022 album "Versions of Me" and the global smash "Envolver," which became the first solo song by a Brazilian artist to top Spotify's Global Daily chart. Beyond music, Anitta has proven herself a multimedia entrepreneur, starring in the Netflix series Sintonia, launching her own makeup line, and becoming a prominent judge on The Voice Brasil. Her work has earned her numerous accolades, including multiple MTV Europe Music Awards and Latin American Music Awards. As a cultural icon, Anitta continues to champion Brazilian music on the world stage while deftly navigating the roles of artist, executive, and influencer.
