The festivities began with a special 35mm screening of Quentin Tarantino's "Jackie Brown", which premiered 27 years ago on Christmas Day in 1997. The event featured notable appearances by actors, directors and film enthusiasts.
De Niro, 80, who recently celebrated his youngest daughter Gia's first birthday, appeared alongside Tarantino, 61, at the SVA Theater. The actor, co-founder of the festival, wore a dark gray polo shirt paired with a dark navy blazer. Tarantino opted for casual elegance with a white button-up shirt and dark denim pants.
Tarantino praised De Niro's performance as Louis Gara, describing it as a masterclass in "posture, mannerism and detail." The director explained, "I think you're the best actor in the world when it comes to that." Tarantino humorously added about working with De Niro, "With Robert, you shut the f**k up...if I say nothing, he'll say 'What did you think?' "
Their discussion further delved into De Niro's career, revealing his earlier struggles. De Niro recounted his experience being let go by director Mike Nichols from "Bogart Slept Here", later reworked into "The Goodbye Girl", and the role eventually earning Richard Dreyfuss an Oscar. Reflecting on the incident, De Niro said, "I blame myself... It was a certain type of comedy -Neil Simon- the timing had to be a certain way, I didn't feel enthused by it."
