Greg Berlanti has teamed up with 'The Vampire Diaries' executive producer Caroline Dries to create the series for a 2019 release.

AceShowbiz - "The Flash" and "Arrow" producer Greg Berlanti is hoping to turn "Batwoman" into a #MeToo era superheroine by giving the comic book character a lesbian storyline.

Berlanti has teamed up with "The Vampire Diaries" executive producer Caroline Dries to create a new "Batwoman" series for 2019 - and their new crime fighter will be gay, out and proud.

"Batwoman", aka Kate Kane, is expected to make her debut on TV in the annual "Arrow"/"The Flash"/"Supergirl"/"DC's Legends of Tomorrow" crossover special in December 2018, and TV bosses at The CW are keen to develop a stand-alone series.

Batwoman first appeared in DC Comics in the mid 1950s and was reintroduced in 2006, when she became the first lesbian superhero title DC character, and now Berlanti and Dries hope to make her the first gay lead character of a live-action superhero series, Deadline reports.

The actress who will play Kane and her alter ego has yet to be chosen, with casting set to begin.

She has previously been portrayed by Kyra Sedgwick in "Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman" and she was voiced by "The Handmaid's Tale" star Yvonne Strahovski in 2016's "Batman: Bad Blood".
