AceShowbiz - After releasing the first-look photos, Universal Pictures now debuts the first trailer for its Neil Armstrong biopic, "First Man". Starring Ryan Gosling as the legendary astronaut, the film looks intense as suggested by the trailer.

The sneak-peek video gives a look at the preparations for NASA's mission to land a man on the moon. Chosen for the mission, Armstrong has to undergo a series of tests which often end with failure. He remains optimistic though, saying, "We need to fail down here, so we don't fail up there."

Meanwhile, his family, including his wife Janet who is played by Golden Globe-winning actress Claire Foy, grows worried about him and the mission. But once the spaceship launches, there's no going back. Unfortunately, the video ends before it sees Armstrong making his first step on the moon.

"First Man" tells the story of NASA's mission to land a man on the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong during the years 1961-1969. A first-person account, the movie will explore the sacrifices and the cost - on Armstrong and on America - of one of the most dangerous space missions in history.

The upcoming biopic is based on James Hansen's biography "First Man: A Life Of Neil A. Armstrong" which is adapted into a script by Josh Singer. The film reunites Gosling with "La La Land" director Damien Chazelle.

Chazelle said that Gosling was his first choice to play the astronaut. "I was fascinated by the psychology of what can drive someone to do what Neil Armstrong did, to physically go further than any human being in history pretty much, in terms of the journey he goes on," he explained to PEOPLE. "I think Ryan is able to capture that kind of drive, that kind of methodical focus, that kind of quiet heroism."

Also starring Kyle Chandler, Jason Clarke, Patrick Fugit, Christopher Abbott, Ciaran Hinds, Ethan Embry, Shea Whigham, Corey Stoll and Pablo Schreiber, "First Man" is due out in the U.S. on October 12.
