In a grimly whimsical world of gothic mystery, the three Baudelaire children—inventor Violet Emily Browning, bookworm Klaus Liam Aiken, and biting baby Sunny—find their lives shattered when a fire claims their parents and a vast fortune. They are placed in the care of a distant relative, the theatrical and treacherously greedy Count Olaf, played with manic glee by Jim Carrey, who desires their inheritance by any dreadful means necessary. Narrated with weary foreboding by Jude Law as the author Lemony Snicket, the siblings are whisked through a series of increasingly perilous new guardians, including the kind but fearful herpetologist Uncle Monty Billy Connolly and the anxious Aunt Josephine Meryl Streep. Through cleverness and unwavering loyalty to each other, the Baudelaires must outwit Olaf’s endless schemes in this darkly adventurous tale that blends macabre humor with a poignant story of resilience against a cascade of unfortunate events.
