Rachel Zegler emerged as one of Hollywood's most notable new talents in the early 2020s, a performer whose powerful singing voice and acting prowess propelled her from high school theater stages to starring in major studio productions. Her breakthrough came with a role that launched a legendary career for a previous generation, winning her a Golden Globe Award and establishing her as a formidable presence in musical cinema.
Born Rachel Anne Zegler on May 3, 2001, in Hackensack, New Jersey, she was raised in the nearby borough of Clifton. Her father, Craig Zegler, is of Polish descent, and her mother, Gina Zegler, is of Colombian ancestry. Her passion for performance was evident from a young age; she began posting covers of popular songs on YouTube and was deeply involved in her high school's theater productions. This online presence would serendipitously lead to her professional debut. In 2018, after seeing an open casting call on Twitter, she submitted a video of herself singing "Tonight" and "I Feel Pretty" from West Side Story. From over 30,000 applicants, director Steven Spielberg selected the then-17-year-old Zegler to play María Vasquez in his acclaimed 2021 adaptation of the classic musical.
Her performance in West Side Story was a sensation, earning her the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and making her the youngest winner in that category at the time. She quickly transitioned to blockbuster fare, starring as Anthea in the DC superhero film Shazam! Fury of the Gods in 2023. That same year, she headlined the prequel The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, playing the pivotal role of Lucy Gray Baird, a performance that showcased both her vocal and dramatic range. In 2024, she made her Broadway debut as Juliet in a new production of Romeo and Juliet.
Zegler's career continued to balance high-profile film work with prestigious stage roles, though not without controversy. Her casting as the titular character in the 2025 musical fantasy Snow White generated significant discussion online prior to its release, and the film was ultimately considered a box-office disappointment. Concurrently, she earned critical acclaim for her West End debut, playing Eva Perón in a revival of Evita in 2025, which garnered her a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical. Rachel Zegler's trajectory, marked by both rapid ascent and public scrutiny, solidified her status as a versatile and compelling performer unafraid to tackle iconic roles across stage and screen.
