The journey of Rachel Zegler from a young actress to a leading Hollywood star has been anything but smooth, with one controversy surrounding her identity and a modern take on classic role.

AceShowbiz - Rachel Zegler, 23, has been making headlines both for her breakthrough performances and the controversies surrounding her. In a revealing interview with Allure, Zegler discussed her struggle to prove her Latina heritage while auditioning for Steven Spielberg's "West Side Story."

"There's confusion because I don't have a single ounce of Latin in my name," she shared. Her background is a blend of Colombian descent from her mother's side and Polish descent from her father's side.

Reflecting on her auditioning process for "West Side Story," Zegler expressed her frustration, "When I was in the running for Maria in West Side Story, they kept calling to ask if I was legit. I remember thinking, 'Do you want me to bring my abuelita in? I will. I'll bring her into the studio if you want to meet her.' "

She blamed the debacle on "a bunch of white executives" who "have you prove your identity to them."

Her portrayal of Maria led to a Golden Globe win for best actress in a musical or comedy film and a personal recommendation from Spielberg to "Snow White" director Marc Webb.

However, Zegler's role as Snow White became another flashpoint, igniting debates due to her non-traditional casting for the character traditionally described as "white as snow."

Zegler's outspoken nature has also caused some friction with Disney, especially given her staunch progressive views. She has openly criticized the original 1937 classic for its "sexist" romance plot. "She's not going to be saved by the prince and she's not going to be dreaming about true love," Zegler stated, highlighting the modern direction the new film takes.

Director Marc Webb defended her casting and dedication, "There are few people who are more dedicated Disney fans than Rachel." Yet, the controversy surrounding her comments and the character's portrayal has led Disney to tread carefully with Zegler, limiting her media engagements and scaling back premieres.

Despite these challenges, Zegler maintains her enthusiasm for diversity and inclusion in Hollywood, hoping for a future where "we invest in and nurture talent no matter what they look like." In her words, "Snow White chooses kindness and still makes change. Power takes many forms."

The live-action "Snow White" is set to release on March 21, and whether the film will rise above the controversies remains to be seen. Zegler's journey reflects a changing Hollywood, grappling with its past while shaping a more inclusive future.
