AceShowbiz - Octet is moving forward with its film adaptation, as revealed by Lin-Manuel Miranda on Tuesday morning. The acclaimed creator shared the news on Instagram, unveiling the cast and confirming that rehearsals have begun for the upcoming musical movie.
The ensemble features a blend of Broadway veterans and film talent, with Amanda Seyfried starring as Jessica, Rachel Zegler taking on the role of Velma, and Sheryl Lee Ralph portraying Paula. Also joining the cast are Phillipa Soo as Karly, Gaten Matarazzo as Toby, Jonathan Groff as Henry, Tramell Tillman as Marvin, and Paul-Jordan Jansen as Ed.
Lin-Manuel Miranda has a history with Phillipa Soo and Jonathan Groff, who both appeared in the original Broadway cast of Hamilton and reprised their roles for the pro-shot version released on Disney+. The other actors bring extensive Broadway experience to the project as well, with the exception of Amanda Seyfried, who has appeared Off-Broadway and is widely recognized for her leading role in the film adaptation of Mamma Mia! and its sequel.
The story of Octet centers on eight individuals deeply engrossed in the Internet who meet in a church basement and lock their phones away. The narrative explores their personal struggles with compulsions, conveyed solely through the “analog vibrancy” of their voices, according to the official synopsis.
Originally created by Dave Malloy, the musical debuted in 2019. For the film, Malloy is adapting his own work into a screenplay and will also serve as an executive producer.
Octet marks Lin-Manuel Miranda’s second directorial feature film, following his 2021 debut with Tick, Tick... BOOM! starring Andrew Garfield.
