AceShowbiz - The Burbs starring Keke Palmer has been officially renewed for a second season on Peacock after an impressive debut earlier this year. The show is a modern remake of the 1989 cult classic originally starring Tom Hanks. The first season premiered on February 8, 2026, immediately following Super Bowl LX on NBC and Peacock, accompanied by widespread advertising during the game.
The series quickly became a standout for Peacock, achieving the platform’s best first-day performance for an original series. It amassed a staggering 1.7 billion minutes of viewership and maintained a position in Nielsen’s U.S. Originals Top 10 for four consecutive weeks. This strong reception has paved the way for the renewal announcement, confirmed by Deadline and accompanied by a statement from Lisa Katz, President of Scripted Content at NBC & Peacock.
"We're so thrilled that audiences loved season one of The 'Burbs, and are going to get to spend more time in Hinkley Hills with Keke and the rest of this incredible cast," Katz said. She praised the writers, producers, and crew for updating the beloved original film into a funny, warm, and contemporary series.
The original The 'Burbs movie featured Tom Hanks as Ray Peterson, a suburban homeowner suspicious of his new neighbors, the Klopeks. The Peacock remake retains the suburban setting of Hinkley Hills and the core premise of a suspicious neighbor moving in but introduces a new storyline and fresh characters. The series includes several Easter eggs, such as a hidden cameo from Tom Hanks himself.
In the series, Keke Palmer plays Samira Fisher, who moves to Hinkley Hills with her husband Rob, portrayed by Jack Whitehall, a native of the area. As they settle in to raise their baby, Samira grows suspicious of their new neighbor Gary Wilson, played by Justin Kirk. Her investigation uncovers unsettling secrets about both her husband and the town’s darker past.
Samira is supported by a group of neighbors who help her unravel the mystery: the widowed Lynn Gardner, played by Julia Duffy, ex-Marine Dana Richards (Paula Pell), and the eccentric Tod Mann (Mark Proksch). Together, they navigate the strange happenings in Hinkley Hills, blending comedy and mystery throughout the series.
The first season’s finale concluded with a significant cliffhanger that sets the stage for The 'Burbs season 2. Creator and showrunner Celeste Hughey has already mapped out the entire second season and has a detailed 10-page pitch ready for production. Hughey revealed that the upcoming season will continue to focus on Samira and Rob’s story while diving deeper into the backgrounds of other characters in the community.
Besides its record-breaking audience numbers, The 'Burbs has been well-received critically. It holds a "Certified Fresh" rating of 78% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, with an audience score of 68%. Notably, the critics’ score surpasses that of the original 1989 film, which stands at 58%.
The renewed interest in the remake coincides with a busy period for both Keke Palmer and Tom Hanks. Palmer has been involved in multiple projects this past year, including films like The Pickup, Good Fortune, Dread Manor, and I Love Boosters, the latter having premiered at SXSW 2026 and scheduled for theatrical release on May 22. Meanwhile, Hanks has appeared in Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme and is currently recording voice work for Toy Story 5, set to release on June 19, in which he reprises his iconic role as Woody.
The success of The 'Burbs remake reflects the effective modernization of a cult classic, blending nostalgia with fresh storytelling and diverse characters. Fans of the original film and new viewers alike can look forward to more episodes that promise to expand the mysteries of Hinkley Hills and deepen the character development introduced in season one.
