Kicking off a professional acting career in the early 1990s, Cate Blanchett was well known for her performances on screen and on stage. She first rose to international stardom for her portrayal of Elizabeth I of England in the 1998 biographical film "Elizabeth", for which she won the British Academy Award for Best Actress, the Golden Globe award, and earned her first Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. She next starred in "The Talented Mr. Ripley" (1999), which was followed with a part in Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" (2001) as Galadriel. The Australia born actress reprised the role in its sequels; "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" (2002), "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" (2003), "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" (2012), "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" (2013), and "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" (2014).
In 2004, Blanchett starred as Katharine Hepburn in "The Aviator" which earned her not only critical acclaim but also an Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. This was followed by a reprising role as Queen Elizabeth I in the 2008 "Elizabeth: The Golden Age". The May 14, 1969 born actress continued giving notable performances in her upcoming features which among others included "I'm Not There", "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull", "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button", "Robin Hood", and the 2015 "Cinderella". She, moreover, also lent her voice to such animation flicks, as "The Galapagos Affair: Satan Came to Eden", "How to Train Your Dragon 2", also "How to Train Your Dragon 3".
Blanchett's career on stage saw her playing the title role in "Electra", Ophelia in "Hamlet", Susan in "Plenty", and the title role in "Hedda Gabler". Her other famous stage roles were those as Blanche DuBois in "A Streetcar Named Desire", Yelena in "Uncle Vanya", and Claire in "The Maids".
Blanchett, who was born Catherine Elise Blanchett, met her husband, playwright and screenwriter Andrew Upton, on the set of a TV show back in 1996. The couple has been married since December 29, 1997. They are parents to three sons: Dashiell John (b. 2001), Roman Robert (b. 2004), and Ignatius Martin (b. 2008).
