AceShowbiz - Hulu’s streaming library is expanding this May, welcoming an underrated sci-fi film that originally debuted on Netflix but never received the recognition it deserved. Among the new science fiction titles added to the platform are notable films like I, Robot starring Will Smith and Steven Spielberg’s 2005 remake of War of the Worlds. However, one of the most overlooked inclusions is the direct-to-streaming creature adventure Love and Monsters.
Love and Monsters became available on Hulu starting May 1st, offering viewers a mix of action, adventure, and heartfelt storytelling. Directed by Michael Matthews, the story is set seven years after a monster apocalypse forces humanity to live underground. The film follows Joel, portrayed by Dylan O’Brien, a charmingly awkward young man who ventures out of his bunker to traverse 80 miles of dangerous, monster-infested terrain in hopes of reuniting with his high school sweetheart.
The movie’s journey to streaming was complicated. Initially planned for a theatrical release, the global COVID-19 pandemic disrupted those plans. Instead, Love and Monsters was released via Video on Demand in the United States, while Netflix handled its international distribution. This unconventional release contributed to the film being largely overlooked despite its quality.
It’s unfortunate that Love and Monsters did not receive the broader attention it merited upon release. Among those who have seen the film, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. The movie holds a “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, boasting an impressive 94% Tomatometer score from critics who praised it as “a real winner” and “a warm-hearted, properly funny and very likeable film.” Audiences also responded favorably, awarding the film an 89% approval rating.
These high scores come as no surprise. Love and Monsters offers a compelling blend of genres and tones, combining the thrills of a post-apocalyptic adventure with the charm of an ’80s coming-of-age romance. The film treats the apocalypse backdrop with a lighthearted touch reminiscent of John Hughes movies, focusing on Joel’s personal growth and romantic quest. Meanwhile, the landscape is filled with imaginative and menacing creatures, including giant crabs, ants, and frogs, which provide plenty of action and suspense.
The film’s tone is a unique mix of feel-good vibes and thrilling monster encounters, drawing comparisons to the humor and energy found in films like Zombieland. It also boasts impressive visual effects, thoughtful world-building, and memorable characters. Notably, Joel’s loyal dog, Boy, steals scenes and adds warmth to the story.
While Love and Monsters is a standout addition, Hulu’s May lineup offers plenty more to explore. The platform has also added Disney’s Holes and the Descendants series, along with classics like Minority Report, Philadelphia, and White Chicks. Looking ahead, Hulu plans to add more titles later in the month, including the horror film We Bury the Dead on May 8th, the sci-fi thriller Alien: Romulus on May 21st, and the suspense movie Afraid on May 28th.
Fans of science fiction and adventure stories will find Love and Monsters a rewarding watch that deserves rediscovery. Its blend of humor, heart, and monster-filled excitement makes it a cult favorite in the making, now accessible to Hulu subscribers after years of relative obscurity.
