Kevin Costner's Western epic flops: $100M budget, $38.8M box office, harsh reviews, and a quick pivot to streaming.

AceShowbiz - Horizon: An American Saga was envisioned as a sweeping four-film Western epic co-written, directed, and starring Kevin Costner. The saga was intended to chronicle the expansion of the American West surrounding the Civil War era over a 15-year span, beginning with its first chapter released in 2024.
The initial installment, Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1, premiered on May 19, 2024, at the Cannes International Film Festival. Despite its high-profile debut, the film was met with harsh critical reviews. The project carried a hefty production budget of $100 million, excluding marketing expenses, yet it managed to bring in only $29 million domestically and $9.8 million internationally, totaling a disappointing $38.8 million worldwide.
Following its underwhelming theatrical run, the first chapter quickly shifted to digital streaming through premium video on demand platforms less than three weeks after its premiere in July 2024. The poor reception and financial performance significantly impacted the trajectory of the saga.
The second chapter, originally slated for release on August 16, 2024, was abruptly removed from Warner Bros.’ distribution schedule and has remained largely unseen by the general public. It was screened only at limited film festivals, where it continued to receive unfavorable reviews, compounding concerns about the franchise's future.
According to a recent report, a source from Warner Bros., which handles the domestic distribution of the films, confirmed that there are currently no plans to release Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 2 in theaters in 2026. The entire project is described as “frozen,” primarily due to ongoing legal complications involving Costner.
On one front, Costner faces a lawsuit alleging he failed to pay over $350,000 in costume rental fees related to the production of Chapter 2. In a separate legal challenge, a stunt double has filed a sexual harassment suit against the filmmakers, claiming an assault scene was unscripted and involved inappropriate behavior. Both cases remain unresolved, further stalling progress on the series.
The ambitious scope of Horizon: An American Saga — spanning multiple films and detailing expansive historical narratives — now hangs in limbo. The combination of financial underperformance, critical backlash, and legal entanglements has left the project’s future uncertain.
Kevin Costner, a celebrated figure in the Western genre, had positioned this series as a major cinematic event, but the setbacks have dampened expectations. The saga’s initial promise of a grand retelling of America’s westward expansion has been overshadowed by the mounting challenges behind the scenes.
For now, audiences will have to wait and see if the troubled saga can overcome its hurdles, or if the project will remain indefinitely on hold. The hopes for a complete four-film narrative have been tempered by two years of disappointing developments.
