AceShowbiz - Kevin Costner is unabashedly proud of his film "Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter One", regardless of its underwhelming box office results. The movie, which Costner wrote, directed and starred in, cost $100 million to produce and grossed only $32 million worldwide. However, Costner believes that the film's impact will extend far beyond its initial release.
"They might point to the finish line-well, this is what it did at the box office-but I know that this movie is going to play for the next 50 years," Costner said in an interview with E! News.
Costner sees "Horizon" as a historical epic that explores the struggles and resilience of his ancestors during the Western expansion. He believes that the film has educational and emotional value, particularly for younger generations.
"There's a moment in time where you want [your children] to see this movie," Costner explained. "To understand that this is what their [ancestors] went through. It's not just a western, it's a history of migration and what they had to do to survive. And I'm really proud of it."
Despite the film's box office failure, Costner remains unyielding in his vision. He believes that his film represents something original and valuable, even if it has not resonated with mainstream audiences.
"I don't really fall out of love with something I feel strongly about," Costner asserted. "Until somebody convinces me otherwise it needs to go in another direction, that doesn't happen."
Costner's co-star Michael Rooker defended the film against negative reviews, calling it "real cinema." He encouraged audiences to embrace the film's longer runtime and its focus on character development.
"We ain't used to that s**t," Rooker said to TMZ. "We're used to 90-minute movies, everything's 90 minutes. Oh come on. Give me a break. Get over that s**t."
The "Horizon" franchise is a planned four-film series. The sequel, "Chapter Two", was originally scheduled for a theatrical release in August but has been taken off the schedule. Instead, the sequel and the first film will premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 7.
Costner is confident in the future of the franchise. He believes that the films will eventually find an audience that appreciates their historical significance and cinematic value.
