AceShowbiz - Bridgerton star Hannah Dodd has revealed she is unaware of how the upcoming season 5 will handle the adaptation of Francesca Bridgerton’s book, especially following the controversial gender swap of her character’s love interest. Speaking in a recent Netflix interview with Jay Lycurgo on March 26, Dodd shared insights into the emotional journey her character faces after the loss of her husband, John.
“We’ve just lost John at the end of [last season]. [My] babes died, which is obviously very sad,” said Dodd, 30. “She’s on her own and she’s got to work out how to start again, so that’s quite an exciting place to start.” Netflix recently confirmed that Dodd’s Francesca will take center stage in the next season, marking her character’s continued development on the show.
On the upcoming season, Dodd admitted, “I have no idea what they’re going to come up with, but it’s very exciting. It’s Franchaela’s turn [in] season 5!” This playful reference highlights the major storyline change that fans will witness, where Francesca’s love interest is no longer Michael, but Michaela—a gender-swapped version played by Masali Baduza.
The decision to modify Francesca’s romantic storyline sparked considerable discussion among fans of Julia Quinn’s original Bridgerton book series. While the books follow Francesca’s journey after John Stirling’s death as she falls for his cousin Michael, the Netflix adaptation has introduced Michaela as a new character, adding a fresh dynamic to the narrative.
Hannah Dodd expressed strong support for this inclusive change. In a July 25 interview with Harper’s Bazaar Australia, she emphasized the importance of representation: “I’m so proud to tell this story. It’s a show about people, and everyone deserves representation on screen.” She praised the show’s commitment to telling diverse stories through characters like Francesca and Michaela.
Francesca’s late husband, John Stirling, portrayed by Victor Alli, died from a ruptured cerebral aneurysm in season 4. This loss sets the stage for Francesca’s emotional path forward in season 5, which will explore her process of healing and rediscovering love. The series continues to adapt Julia Quinn’s eight-book saga, with each season focusing on a different Bridgerton sibling’s romantic journey.
The gender swap of Michael to Michaela caused some backlash among purist fans of the books, prompting showrunner Jess Brownell to address the controversy. In a March 24 interview with Tudum, Brownell stated, “I want to state really plainly, there is no place for homophobia or racism or any form of bigotry in the Bridgerton world. Bridgerton is about love and inclusivity.”
Brownell also praised the cast, saying, “Masali and Hannah and all of our cast and crew deserve nothing but positivity and love. It’s been beautiful to see the way fans have already started rallying around them, and I can’t wait to watch that love grow.” This message reflects the show’s broader commitment to embracing diverse narratives.
Julia Quinn, the author of the original series, has also voiced her approval of the onscreen changes. Speaking exclusively to Us Weekly in May 2025, Quinn acknowledged some fans’ disappointment but stood by the creative choices. “I expected some disappointment, [but] I didn’t expect people, like, calling me names and saying like, ‘Oh, go deposit your big fat check,’ and, ‘You sold out. You’re a terrible person,’” she said.
Quinn encouraged fans who might be unhappy with the changes to remember that the original books remain available. “If you can’t handle it, there’s always the book. I’m not going to rewrite the book, and you can have one of each.” She also reaffirmed that Francesca’s love for John remains central to her character’s story despite the new romantic direction.
“She does [love John], trust me, and that needed to be an important part of the story that both she and Michaela are really mourning him, because that’s the crux of the story,” Quinn explained. She described the upcoming season as potentially “heart-wrenching” and “emotional,” in line with the tone of Francesca’s book, When He Was Wicked.
Season 3 had already expanded Francesca’s role significantly, especially after the recasting of the character, and allowed audiences to see her relationship with John. With John’s death in season 4, the focus now shifts to how Francesca navigates life without him and whether she can open her heart to Michaela.
The official season 5 synopsis confirms this new chapter: “Two years after losing her beloved husband John, Fran decides to reenter the marriage mart for practical reasons. But when John’s cousin Michaela returns to London to tend to the Kilmartin estate, Fran’s complicated feelings will have her questioning whether to stick to her pragmatic intentions or pursue her inner passions.”
The upcoming season will span eight episodes and is set years after the events of season 4. This time jump allows the narrative to explore Francesca’s growth and the complexity of her evolving relationships. Fans can expect an emotionally charged storyline with themes of grief, love, and self-discovery.
Currently, the first four seasons of Bridgerton are available for streaming on Netflix, providing context for the new developments and character arcs that will unfold in season 5. With the show’s blend of historical drama and modern inclusivity, viewers remain eager to see how Francesca’s story continues to evolve.
As anticipation builds for the next season, Hannah Dodd remains excited but in the dark about the full details of her character’s journey. Her enthusiasm and support for the show’s direction underscore the creative team’s commitment to telling fresh, inclusive stories that respect the source material while embracing contemporary values.
