AceShowbiz - The story of the forthcoming Sense & Sensibility adaptation has taken an exciting step forward with the reveal of an exclusive trailer at CinemaCon. Set to debut on October 16, this highly anticipated film brings Jane Austen’s beloved novel to life under the direction of Georgia Oakley, known for Blue Jean.
The film stars Daisy Edgar-Jones as Elinor Dashwood and Esme Creed-Miles as her sister Marianne Dashwood. Joining them is Caitríona Balfe portraying their mother, Mrs. Dashwood. The cast also features George MacKay, Frank Dillane, and Herbert Nordrum in the roles of the sisters’ romantic interests Edward Ferrars, John Willoughby, and Colonel Brandon, respectively.
At the convention for theater exhibitors, Focus Features premiered a trailer that remains unavailable online but showcased key plot points faithful to the original novel. The footage depicted the Dashwood sisters enduring hardship at the hands of their late father’s heir, Robert Ferrars, played by Forrest Bothwell. Forced from their family home, they relocate to a smaller house where they encounter the lively and supportive Mrs. Jennings, portrayed by Fiona Shaw.
The trailer goes on to illustrate the infamous rake John Willoughby’s meeting with Marianne, followed by a series of emotionally charged scenes capturing the tension and passion both between the sisters and their respective love interests. This adherence to the source material suggests the filmmakers aim to deliver a traditional period drama experience, honoring Austen’s narrative and character dynamics.
Previous adaptations of Sense & Sensibility have predominantly maintained a period setting, with the 1995 Oscar-winning version directed by Ang Lee being the most celebrated. That film featured an esteemed cast including Emma Thompson, who also wrote the screenplay, Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant, Alan Rickman, Imelda Staunton, and Hugh Laurie. While some Austen novels have seen popular modern reinterpretations—such as Clueless for Emma or Bridget Jones’s Diary for Pride & Prejudice—modern updates of Sense & Sensibility have been less prominent, including 2006’s Material Girls and 2011’s From Prada to Nada.
Additionally, the novel has recently been adapted into a period piece by Hallmark in 2024, starring Deborah Ayorinde and Bethany Antonia. This marked Hallmark's first Austen period drama, following their history of modern Austen-inspired projects like Sense, Sensibility, and Snowmen and Christmas at Pemberley Manor.
The new film’s cast offers strong potential to elevate this adaptation. Daisy Edgar-Jones, nominated for a BAFTA for her role opposite Paul Mescal in the 2020 limited series Normal People, has demonstrated versatility across genres, with performances in the horror-comedy Fresh, the crime miniseries Under the Banner of Heaven, and the disaster film Twisters. Her background in romantic drama uniquely positions her to embody Austen’s nuanced heroine.
Similarly, Caitríona Balfe's extensive experience starring in the hit time travel romance Outlander aligns well with the Regency-era romantic themes of Sense & Sensibility. Meanwhile, Fiona Shaw, who also appears in the cast, is a three-time Emmy nominee known for her roles in Fleabag and Killing Eve, as well as for playing Aunt Petunia Dursley in the Harry Potter films, adding further prestige to the ensemble.
With a screenplay by Diana Reid and production led by Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan, this adaptation aims to balance fidelity to Jane Austen’s classic novel with the fresh energy brought by its contemporary cast and director. As the release date approaches, audiences will be eager to see whether this version can achieve the critical and popular success enjoyed by its notable predecessors.
