AceShowbiz - Daisy Edgar-Jones’s much-anticipated new adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility has been postponed, with the release date now officially set for October 16, 2026. This marks a delay from the film’s original U.S. theatrical release, which was scheduled for September 11, 2026, according to Focus Features.
Daisy Edgar-Jones will star as the lead character, Elinor Dashwood, in this fresh take on Austen’s classic novel. The cast also includes notable performers such as Esmé Creed-Miles, Caitríona Balfe, Frank Dillane, George MacKay, Herbert Nordrum, Fiona Shaw, and Bodhi Rae Breathnach. The story remains faithful to its Georgian England setting, chronicling the struggles of the Dashwood family after the death of their wealthy father, Mr. Dashwood.
Following his passing, the Dashwood women — Mr. Dashwood’s widow and their three daughters — face financial hardship that forces them to leave their family estate. They relocate to a modest cottage, where the two eldest daughters, Elinor and Marianne, navigate the challenges of love and social expectations.
In terms of casting specifics, Esmé Creed-Miles will portray the passionate and impulsive Marianne Dashwood, Elinor’s younger sister. Caitríona Balfe is cast as Mrs. Dashwood, the mother of Elinor and Marianne. Meanwhile, Frank Dillane will take on the role of John Willoughby, Marianne’s charming first love interest. George MacKay plays Edward Ferrars, the reserved suitor of Elinor, and Herbert Nordrum appears as Colonel Brandon, another important romantic figure in Marianne’s life. Fiona Shaw is featured as Mrs. Jennings, the socialite who interacts with the Dashwood sisters during their time in London, and Bodhi Rae Breathnach will be Margaret Dashwood, the youngest Dashwood sister.
The production team behind this new adaptation includes Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner of Working Title Films, India Flint of November Pictures, and Jo Wallett of Kiddo Films. Working Title and Focus Features have a history of successfully adapting Austen’s work, having collaborated on the 2005 version of Pride & Prejudice, which received four Academy Award nominations, and the 2020 film adaptation of Emma.
The 1995 film adaptation of Sense and Sensibility remains a beloved classic, starring Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, Kate Winslet, and Alan Rickman. That version was both a critical and box office success, earning roughly $135 million worldwide from a $16 million budget. It garnered seven Oscar nominations and won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
More recently, Austen’s enduring popularity has led to additional screen adaptations. A Hallmark Channel film remake of Sense and Sensibility was released in 2024, while Netflix is developing a six-episode miniseries of Pride and Prejudice written by Dolly Alderton. That series stars Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet and Jack Lowden as Mr. Darcy. Another upcoming project, The Other Bennet Sister, will focus on Mary Bennet from Pride and Prejudice, highlighting renewed interest in Austen’s stories.
The new Sense and Sensibility film, directed by Georgia Oakley and written by Diana Reid, looks to add a fresh perspective to Austen’s work while honoring the legacy of previous adaptations. Fans of the novel and period dramas can expect the film to open in theaters on October 16, 2026.
