AceShowbiz - The upcoming remake of American Psycho is described as a "bold choice" by Christian Bale, who originally portrayed the character Patrick Bateman in the 2000 film adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’s 1991 novel. Bale’s portrayal remains well-known.
Director Luca Guadagnino, known for films like Challengers, revealed during the Lionsgate panel at Cinemacon 2025 that he is working on a new version of American Psycho. The screenplay is being written by Scott Z. Burns. Guadagnino’s involvement has generated interest.
During the premiere of The Bride!, Bale’s latest film directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, The Hollywood Reporter asked the actor if he had any suggestions for who might take on the role of Patrick Bateman in the remake. Bale responded with openness to the idea of a new actor tackling the role but admitted he has no concrete information about the project. He described the effort as a "bold" undertaking.
"Whoever wants to give it a shot, give it a pop. I loved making it with [director] Mary Harron so many years back, fantastic memories of it all. Bold choice of anyone to try to do a - I don't know if they're doing a remake or what, I don't know anything else about it. But all the best to 'em, I like brave people," Bale said.
Bret Easton Ellis, the author of the source novel, recently shared insights about the difficulties in casting the new American Psycho. He noted that several high-profile actors have declined the role. Ellis emphasized that this new film will be "completely different" from Mary Harron’s 2000 adaptation.
Rumors have circulated around potential stars for the new Patrick Bateman, with names like Robert Pattinson, Jacob Elordi, Austin Butler, and even Margot Robbie being mentioned. However, most of these reports have been debunked, and the role remains uncast officially.
ScreenRant’s review of American Psycho credits the original casting as a crucial element of the film’s success. Grant Hermanns pointed out that one of the essential requirements was finding an actor the audience could "tolerate watching, regardless of his actions," which director Harron achieved with Bale. The 2000 film also featured performances by Justin Theroux, Josh Lucas, Chloë Sevigny, Reese Witherspoon, Bill Sage, Jared Leto, and Willem Dafoe.
While Bale will not be involved in the new American Psycho, audiences can soon see him in The Bride!, where he plays Frankenstein’s monster, known as Frank. The film is scheduled for release on March 6.
In addition to The Bride!, Bale is attached to other projects, including Michael Mann’s Heat 2, though his role remains undisclosed. He is also portraying Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis in the upcoming film Madden, which stars Nicolas Cage as the NFL coach.
With the new American Psycho remake still in early stages and no confirmed casting, anticipation remains. Fans and critics alike will be watching to see how this reinvention unfolds and who will ultimately step into the role of Patrick Bateman.
