AceShowbiz - Patti Smith was called out by famed New York City restaurateur Keith McNally for her diva behavior. He made the claims in his forthcoming memoir, "I Regret Almost Everything", recounting her alleged mistreatment of waitstaff at McNally's One Fifth restaurant.
According to excerpts, Smith, now 78, frequently visited One Fifth with her then-boyfriend, photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, in the 1970s. McNally describes Smith and Mapplethorpe as "very difficult to wait on," singling out Smith in particular for her "incredibly rude" treatment of servers.
"It's impossible for me to listen to a Patti Smith song today without remembering her reducing a waitress to tears because she forgot to put bread on the table," McNally wrote.
He claimed that while Mapplethorpe could be terse, it was Smith who often belittled the staff, making her the customer least liked by servers. The restaurateur noted that Smith's visits were dreaded, likening her behavior to that of "the James Corden of her day."
In October 2022, McNally accused James Corden of being "abusive" to the staff at his restaurant Balthazar, temporarily banning the comedian before rescinding the ban following Corden's profuse apology.
Smith has not publicly commented on McNally's claims. However, McNally's forthcoming memoir, due to be published on May 6, is expected to shed further light on his storied interactions with celebrities during his extensive career in the hospitality industry.
