AceShowbiz - Patti Smith, the 78-year-old veteran rocker, reassured her fans that she's "absolutely fine" following a dramatic onstage collapse during a concert in Brazil. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday night, January 29 in São Paulo, saw Smith end up on the floor.
After struggling to stand up, she temporarily left the stage to recuperate. She blamed it on a bout of dizziness induced by a severe migraine.
Smith was performing with the Berlin-based Soundwalk Collective as part of the "Correspondences" project, a collaborative effort involving her recitations alongside live music. About 30 minutes into her set, she seemed to lose her balance, attempting to support herself on the microphone or music stand.
Eyewitness Micheline Alves noted, "She clearly felt dizzy. She started moving backward and fell in a way - I think she tried to support herself on the microphone or the music stand. And everything fell on top of her."
The crowd was visibly concerned as Smith remained on the floor for several minutes before being helped offstage. Despite her condition, Smith's resilience shone through when she returned in a wheelchair to address her audience.
"Unfortunately, I got sick," she said. "And the doctor said I can't finish. So we will have to figure something out. And I feel very badly." The audience, however, responded with encouragement and love, prompting Smith to sing "Wing" and "Because the Night" a cappella, creating a touching moment for both the artist and her fans.
In a heartfelt Instagram post shared the next day, Smith explained the ordeal, "This is [me] letting everyone know that I am fine. I had some post migraine dizziness. Had a small incident, left the stage, and returned 10 minutes later and talked to the people, told them I was fine and sang them Wing and Because the Night."
She further expressed her gratitude to an "excellent doctor" for her quick recovery and urged fans not to accept any other story.
Smith's team and the Soundwalk Collective, underlining her commitment, had initially hoped to continue with their planned schedule. Unfortunately, they announced the cancellation of the next day's performance, citing the need for Smith to recover fully.
"Patti is now recovering strongly but our caring doctors say she needs a little more time to be at her best," the group shared on social media.
This incident, although concerning, highlighted Smith's dedication to her craft and her fans. Despite facing health challenges, her willingness to return to the stage and complete her performance earned praise and support from fans. "Trust me, I am fine," Smith reiterated, assuring her devoted followers who continue to admire her resilience and passion.
