Tyson Fury
Tyson Luke Fury, born August 12, 1988, in Manchester, England, established himself as one of the most charismatic, unpredictable, and dominant heavyweight boxers of his generation. The son of former professional boxer John Fury, he was named after the former undisputed heavyweight champion Mike Tyson. From a family with Irish Traveller heritage, Fury was introduced to boxing at a young age and found early success as an amateur, winning a bronze medal at the 2006 World Junior Championships and the ABA super-heavyweight title in 2008 before turning professional later that year.
His professional career was marked by a rapid ascent through the British and European ranks. Fury captured the British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles in 2011, defending them successfully while building an undefeated record. His victory over Dereck Chisora in 2014 earned him the European title and a mandatory challenger position for the world championship. The pinnacle of his early career came in November 2015, when he traveled to Düsseldorf and dethroned the long-reigning unified world champion Wladimir Klitschko in a masterful tactical display. The stunning upset earned him The Ring magazine's Fighter of the Year and Upset of the Year awards, cementing his status as the lineal heavyweight champion.
Personal struggles with mental health, substance abuse, and weight gain led Fury to vacate his titles and step away from boxing for over two years. His return to the sport in 2018 was one of the great comebacks in boxing history. After two tune-up fights, he faced the fearsome WBC champion Deontay Wilder in December 2018, surviving a dramatic twelfth-round knockdown to earn a controversial split draw. The bout's final round was named Round of the Year by The Ring, which also awarded Fury its Comeback of the Year honor. He secured a dominant victory over Deontay Wilder in their 2020 rematch to claim the WBC title, a performance that earned him The Ring's Fighter of the Year award for a second time. He solidified his dominance in an epic 2021 trilogy fight against Wilder, which was named Fight of the Year.
After successful title defenses against Dillian Whyte and Derek Chisora, Fury faced unified champion Oleksandr Usyk in May 2024 for the undisputed heavyweight championship, suffering his first professional defeat by split decision. A contracted rematch is scheduled for December 2024. Beyond the ring, Fury became a bestselling author and a high-profile figure in entertainment, with his earnings placing him among the world's highest-paid athletes. As of late 2025, The Ring magazine ranks him as the best heavyweight contender below champion Oleksandr Usyk.
