Despite remaining at the top spot on the domestic box office, the fourth 'Captain America' movie suffered a sharp drop in ticket sales during the second weekend.

AceShowbiz - Marvel's "Captain America: Brave New World" continues to dominate the box office but not without facing significant challenges. In its second weekend, the superhero film saw a drastic 68% drop, earning $28.3 million domestically.
This follows a robust $100 million debut over the extended Valentine's Day/Presidents Day holiday, including $88.4 million for the three-day frame. So far, the film has generated $141 million domestically and a global total of $289.4 million.
The movie, starring Anthony Mackie as the new Captain America, has received mixed reactions. It maintains appeal among a diverse audience and families, especially young boys, but struggles with a B- CinemaScore - the worst grade in MCU history.
Industry insiders note that the film was produced during a highly stretched period for Marvel, impacting its reception. Directed by Julius Onah, "Brave New World" also features notable actors such as Harrison Ford, Danny Ramirez, and Liv Tyler.
The new Captain America movie's steep decline mirrors other Marvel titles like "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania," which saw a 70% drop in its second week.
Analysts express concern over the MCU's declining box office momentum post-"Avengers: Endgame." Senior Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian notes, "There's still no denying these movies have appeal. But a second weekend drop of 68% reflects less audience enthusiasm than you'd expect from Marvel."
Meanwhile, NEON's "The Monkey," directed by Osgood Perkins, had a strong $14.2 million launch from 3,200 North American theaters, marking the second-biggest debut for the indie distributor.
Based on Stephen King's short story, this graphic horror film is about cursed toys causing gruesome deaths. Despite its "C+" CinemaScore, the movie is praised for its shocking and thrilling experience, with King himself calling it "bats*** insane." Produced on a $10 million budget, the film stars Theo James and Tatiana Maslany.
Other films also vied for box office attention. "Paddington in Peru," the third installment of the beloved bear's adventures, fell to third place with $6.5 million, accumulating $25.2 million in North America.
Universal and DreamWorks' "Dog Man" claimed the fourth spot with $5.9 million, bringing its domestic total to $78.7 million. Meanwhile, Chinese animated sensation "Ne Zha 2" earned $3 million domestically, contributing to its record-breaking global tally of $1.7 billion.
As "Brave New World" struggles to recover, industry eyes remain peeled for upcoming blockbusters, with no major releases until Disney's "Snow White" remake hits theaters on March 21.
