AceShowbiz - Hollywood legend Richard Gere is bidding farewell to the United States and embarking on a new journey with his family in Spain. Gere's move is not just a change of scenery but a heartfelt return to his wife Alejandra Silva's roots.
The "Pretty Woman" actor appeared on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" on November 20, where he shared the news of his family's relocation to Madrid. Gere, 75, and his wife, Alejandra Silva, 41, believe the move will benefit their bilingual children. "Our kids are bilingual so they're going to flourish there," Gere explained on the show.
Gere and Silva's decision to move stems from Silva's desire to be closer to her extended Spanish family. "My wife grew up in a big Spanish family, like a big Italian family, and her grandmother was kind of the glue that held that all together," Gere mentioned.
Following Silva's grandmother's passing two years ago, Silva has started taking on the role of the family matriarch. "She's already planning for 35 people for Sunday lunches," Gere added, emphasizing the importance of familial bonds.
Gere and Silva's union began in 2014 and culminated in a 2018 wedding. They share two sons, Alexander, 5, and James, 4. Silva also has an 11-year-old son, Albert, from a previous marriage while Gere has a 24-year-old son, Homer, from his second marriage to Carey Lowell.
Prior to the move, Gere sold his Connecticut home for $10.75 million in October. He had acquired the property in 2022 for $10.8 million from Grammy-winning singer Paul Simon.
Gere had first revealed the plans of moving to Spain in an April interview with Vanity Fair Spain. "For Alejandra, it will be wonderful to be closer to her family, her lifelong friends, and her culture," he expressed, appreciating her for spending six years in the United States.
While Gere assures fans he will return to the United States, he highlighted the importance of embracing Silva's heritage. The Hollywood couple's move comes on the heels of other celebrities relocating after Donald Trump's re-election. Prominent figures like Eva Longoria and Ellen DeGeneres have also opted for residences abroad. However, Longoria clarified that her move was driven by professional commitments rather than political discontent.
Gere's cheerful and affectionate tone during his interviews mirrors the positive outlook the family holds for their life in Spain. "We're going there for her family, her friends, her culture," Gere concluded, preparing for an enriching new chapter abroad with his loved ones.
