AceShowbiz - Richard Gere, the 75-year-old star of "American Gigolo", has announced his move to Spain with his wife, 41-year-old Alejandra Silva, and their two children. Speaking on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon", Gere joked about the relocation being "world news" but emphasized his commitment to return to the United States.
The couple, who married in 2018, shares two sons, Alexander, 5, and James, 4. Gere also has a 24-year-old son, Homer, from his marriage to Carey Lowell, while Silva has an 11-year-old son, Albert, from her previous marriage to Govind Friedland.
Gere explained that their move is based on Silva's wish to be near her extended family in Madrid. He praised Spain for its "generous" lifestyle and expressed excitement for their new adventure.
In April 2024, Gere had first hinted at their plans to move, stating that it would be a "great adventure" and an enriching experience for his children. He emphasized Silva's need to reconnect with her family, calling it a "fair exchange" after she spent seven years in the United States with him.
Gere's decision to relocate comes amid a trend of celebrities leaving their Hollywood roots. Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, Sharon Stone, Cher and Barbra Streisand have all threatened or made plans to move out of the United States.
Gere's move to Spain will allow his family to immerse themselves in the Spanish culture and language, which will be beneficial for his children's development. The couple's purchase of a $11 million home in Connecticut was sold in October, reflecting their commitment to their new life in Spain.
Despite the move, Gere will continue to maintain a presence in the United States. He owns a house in the countryside near New York, and he emphasizes that his ties to his home country remain strong.
