AceShowbiz - On Friday, October 18th, singer Shawn Mendes took the stage at the Brooklyn Paramount Theater and paid a heartfelt tribute to Liam Payne, the former One Direction member who tragically passed away at the age of 31.
Speaking to the audience, Mendes shared his memories of meeting Payne on "a couple of occasions." He described Payne as having a "beautiful soul" and "gleaming eyes."
Mendes expressed his grief and support for Payne's loved ones: "It's about grieving those we miss with tears and it's also about celebrating them and who they were. I just want to take a second to send so much love to him wherever he is up there. Liam, we love you. The world is crying for you, brother, and we're all praying for your son and your family. I miss you."
As a tribute, Mendes performed an unreleased song titled "Heart of Gold," which he had previously played live. In the chorus, he sang, "You had a heart of gold/You left too soon, it was out of your control."
Mendes' tribute follows a wave of messages from celebrities and fans around the world remembering Payne. His fellow One Direction bandmates Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan released a joint statement expressing their devastation over his passing.
Creator of "The X Factor", Simon Cowell, who launched Payne's career, also shared his heartbreak and devastation over the loss.
