AceShowbiz - In an emotional and transparent update, Danielle Fishel, the actress best known for her portrayal of Topanga Lawrence on the teen sitcom "Boy Meets World", has shared a significant milestone in her battle against breast cancer. Fishel, 43, revealed her diagnosis in August and successfully underwent two lumpectomies to remove the cancer.
Speaking to "Today", Fishel confirmed, "There is no evidence of disease, so the surgery was successful and got the cancer out of my body." However, she reminded her fans, "But they call cancer a journey for a reason. It's not just walk in and have even one procedure and then you're done."
Fishel decided on a lumpectomy over a double mastectomy to ensure a quicker recovery, enabling her to return to her directorial duties on "Lopez vs. Lopez" by August 21. Without the genetic markers that would justify a double mastectomy, she pursued the lumpectomy route. "I've worked many years to get this opportunity to direct these five episodes... I want to get back to my normal life as quickly as possible. How do I do that?" she explained.
Post-surgery, Fishel will start hormone therapy and may undergo radiation, with rigorous monitoring including regular mammograms and an annual MRI. Her early diagnosis was due to a timely annual mammogram, which she strongly advocates.
"I was so lucky that I found my cancer so early because I went and had my annual mammogram on time... I caught it early. I can be done with this soon. But there really is no 'done with it.' And so that has been an emotional and mental process," Fishel conveyed.
Sharing personal details, Danielle explained how she broke the news to her husband, Jensen Karp, who tragically lost both parents to lung cancer. For their young sons Adler, five, and Keaton, three, she simplified the explanation by telling them she would have a "boo boo" and needed gentle hugs.
Reiterating the significance of preventive care, she turned to Instagram, speaking to her 1.2 million followers, "I'm proud to team up with @aflac to spread the word about the life-saving effects of preventive care. Knowing my breast cancer diagnosis early on gave me the power to take action. That's why, no matter how busy you are, it's important to make time for annual checkups and screenings - because #yourwellnessmatters."
Danielle's courage and transparency are a vivid reminder of the importance of early detection and the relentless journey that is battling cancer.
