AceShowbiz - JoJo Siwa stirred the pot at the Industry Dance Awards on October 8 with a seemingly innocuous yet humorous tribute to Beyonce Knowles. Jumping on an ongoing internet trend, Siwa exclaimed on stage, "I also have to say thank you to Beyoncé, just so that we can keep the dancing community safe."
This statement, meant to be lighthearted, elicited a blend of groans and laughter from the audience.
Siwa continued her playful homage by adding, "Beyoncé, you've got great music. We all love to dance to it. We all love you. … Someone had to, and I will be the someone."
While this may appear to be a genuine acknowledgment of Beyoncé's impact on the dance community, it's closely tied to a social media joke. This trend sees users humorously praising Beyoncé at every turn, suggesting that doing so keeps them in her good graces and ensures their continued success.
However, Siwa's light-hearted shout-out has been interpreted by some as connected to more sinister narratives. Unsubstantiated rumors have linked Beyoncé and her husband, Jay-Z, to alleged crimes involving Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, who is currently awaiting trial for charges including sex trafficking and racketeering.
When asked by Us Weekly about the potential controversy stirred by her joke, Siwa responded by acknowledging the unpredictable nature of the internet. She remarked, "The internet's going to run with whatever it is they run with. They do their thing, and I can't predict what they're going to do. I think Beyoncé is great and she's written a lot of incredible music that we've all used [and danced to]."
Despite the jokes circulating online, it's clear that Beyoncé's legal team takes defamatory comments seriously. After Jaguar Wright made claims about the Carters being "monsters" with "hundreds of victims" on "Piers Morgan Uncensored", Beyoncé and Jay-Z's lawyer promptly demanded the content be removed. Piers Morgan complied, stating, "Their lawyers contacted us to say that those claims were totally false and have no basis in fact."
"We've therefore complied with the legal request to cut them from the original interview. Editing interviews is not something we do lightly on a show called Uncensored. But, like the proverbial cries of fire in a crowded theater, there are legal limits on us, too. And we apologize to Jay-Z and Beyoncé."
JoJo Siwa's humorous tribute highlights the complexities of internet culture, where a simple joke can spiral into much larger and more serious discourses. Her lighthearted praise of Beyoncé, meant to join a viral trend, inadvertently intersected with serious allegations and legal actions.
