The Smashing Pumpkins are an American alternative rock band that gained prominence in the 1990s, recognized for their distinctive sound that blends various musical genres. Formed in Chicago in 1988 by frontman and guitarist Billy Corgan, guitarist James Iha, bassist D'arcy Wretzky, and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, the band became a significant force in the alternative rock scene. Their breakthrough came with the release of their second album, Siamese Dream, in 1993, which is often hailed as one of the best albums in the genre and solidified their status in the music industry.

The band's early work, including their debut album Gish, received critical acclaim and helped establish a solid underground following. However, it was the success of Siamese Dream that catapulted them into mainstream recognition. The album's tumultuous recording process and Corgan's intense songwriting contributed to its depth and complexity, resonating with listeners and critics alike. The band's third studio album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, released in 1995, further escalated their popularity. The double album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and was certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), marking a pinnacle in their career.

Despite their success, internal conflicts, issues with drug use, and declining sales led to the band's disbandment in the late 1990s after the release of Adore in 1998 and a two-part project in 2000, Machina and Machina II. Nevertheless, the Smashing Pumpkins maintained a significant impact on the music landscape, with over 30 million albums sold worldwide, making them one of the most commercially successful bands of their time and a key act in the popularization of alternative rock.

In 2006, Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin reunited to record the band's seventh studio album, Zeitgeist. Following a successful tour in 2007 and 2008, the lineup underwent changes when Chamberlin left the band in early 2009. Corgan then initiated a new project titled Teargarden by Kaleidyscope, which featured a series of singles, EPs, and two full albums: Oceania in 2012 and Monuments to an Elegy in 2014. The band's dynamic continued to evolve, with Chamberlin returning as a touring member in 2015 and officially rejoining alongside Iha in 2018.

The reunited lineup has since released several new works, including Shiny and Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun. in 2018 and Cyr in 2020. Their most recent project, Atum: A Rock Opera in Three Acts, was released across three parts between 2022 and 2023. In October 2023, guitarist Jeff Schroeder departed from the band, yet the remaining members continued to create music, releasing Aghori Mhori Mei in 2024. The Smashing Pumpkins remain a vital and evolving presence in the music industry, continuing to attract a dedicated fan base while influencing new generations of artists.
