AceShowbiz - The Smashing Pumpkins frontman, Billy Corgan, has taken to social media to share his personal journey with body positivity and to open up about his "port wine" birthmarks, which he has kept hidden for most of his life.
Corgan, inspired by model Carlotta Bertotti who has a birthmark on her face, wrote, "I'm a fan of body positivity movements because at the end of the day it is about celebrating what makes us 'us.'" He added, "So as you see, here is a beautiful young woman who has embraced her 'difference' with grace."
Corgan admitted that he has spent his entire life trying to conceal his birthmarks due to relentless teasing as a child. He shared that even close friends who have known him for years are shocked when they finally notice the birthmark.
"So positive message for the day," Corgan concluded. "Whoever you are, I hope you find peace with who you are because: I would like to know that person and no one else."
Port wine stains, also known as "nevus flammeus," are permanent birthmarks that occur in newborns and may become darker, raised, or bumpy over time. They are caused by abnormally formed capillaries that have dilated and become wider than normal.
Corgan's port wine birthmark is prominently displayed on the cover of his 2005 solo debut album, "TheFutureEmbrace". However, he has rarely spoken about it in interviews. In a 1995 interview, he discussed the birthmark and how it affected his childhood. "I have a really big birthmark on my left hand, which as an adult is obviously not that important, but as a child you feel like you have a completely deformed arm," he said.
Corgan's decision to share his story is a powerful reminder that everyone has a unique story to tell and that we should all strive to embrace our individuality. His message of body positivity and self-acceptance is an inspiration to others who may be struggling with self-doubt or societal pressures to conform.
