AceShowbiz - Macklemore has been removed from Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour following public backlash over his pro-Palestine comments made during recent performances.
On September 14, Messina Touring Group (MTG), the longtime promoter for Sheeran’s U.S. tour, announced that Macklemore would no longer appear on the remaining dates. The decision reportedly came after some venues threatened to pull out if Macklemore remained in the lineup, prompting MTG to prioritize avoiding cancellations that would affect hundreds of thousands of fans.
The controversy began after Macklemore used his opening sets at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium on September 4 and 5 to voice support for Palestinians, including urging the crowd with the phrase “Free Palestine.” These remarks sparked strong reactions from pro-Israel groups and led to demands for his removal from the tour.
In a detailed Instagram statement, Macklemore explained that the issue escalated when Ed Sheeran informed him that Robert Kraft, the owner of the New England Patriots and Gillette Stadium, had objected to Macklemore’s participation in upcoming shows. According to Macklemore, Kraft then influenced other stadium owners and presented Sheeran with an ultimatum: if Macklemore stayed on the tour, Sheeran would lose access to those venues for his concerts.
Macklemore described the situation as difficult for Sheeran, who is generally apolitical, and acknowledged why artists might avoid engaging in political statements due to potential career risks. However, Macklemore emphasized his personal choice not to remain neutral on the issue.
He also clarified that neither he nor Sheeran are victims in this scenario, stating that the real victims are the Palestinian people. Furthermore, Macklemore made a point to reject accusations of antisemitism, expressing concern that the term is sometimes misused to silence supporters of Palestine and to shield Israel from accountability.
As of now, XXL has reached out to Robert Kraft’s representatives for comment regarding these developments.
This incident highlights the complex intersection of politics and entertainment, showing how outspoken positions on international issues can impact artists’ careers and tour arrangements.
