AceShowbiz - Netflix has announced that it has canceled Spike Lee's series adaptation of "She's Gotta Have It" after running for two seasons on the streaming giant. However, fans of the scripted comedy shouldn't have to worry as Lee is reportedly planning to find a new home for the TV series.
"Spike Lee is one of the greatest filmmakers of all time and we're thrilled he brought the series 'She's Gotta Have It' to Netflix," Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said on Wednesday, July 17 in a statement. "While this is our last season, we're very proud that it will be on our service for years to come, and excited to be working with Spike on his upcoming Netflix film 'Da 5 Bloods'."
Breakout star DeWanda Wise, who played Nola Darling on the series, took to her Instagram account to address the cancellation. "Once you start to speak, people will yell at you. They will interrupt you, put you down and suggest it's personal. And the world won't end. And the speaking will get easier and easier," she wrote in her post. "And you will find you have fallen in love with your own vision, which you may never have realized you had. And you will lose some friends and lovers, and realize you don't miss them. And new ones will find you and cherish you."
"And you will still flirt and paint your nails, dress up and party, because, as I think Emma Goldman said, 'If I can't dance, I don't want to be part of your revolution.'And at last you'll know with surpassing certainty that only one thing is more frightening than speaking your truth. And that is not speaking,' " she continued. "AudreLorde Saying 'Until' to Nola Darling today."
The heartbreaking news arrives two months after the comedy returned for its sophomore season. With Netflix pulling the plug on the show, "She's Gotta Have It" marks the latest short-lived series to get the ax at Netflix. Prior to this, the streaming giant canceled "One Day at a Time" following a three-season run and "Santa Clarita Diet" which also got canceled after three seasons.
"She's Gotta Have It" is based on the 1986 comedy drama flick. Premiering on November 23, 2017, the show also starred Anthony Ramos, Lyriq Bent, Cleo Anthony, Margot Bingham, Chyna Layne and De'Adre Aziza.
