The heartbreak single talks about the in-between phase where you remind yourself that things will get better over time and there will be no need to rush things.

AceShowbiz - Alessia Cara continues the rollout for her upcoming sophomore album "The Pains of Growing". As the release date for the album inches closer, the 22-year-old songstress unearthed a new single entitled "Not Today" on Tuesday, November 13.

Unlike other breakup songs which revolves around getting over their exes, her new single talks about the in-between phase where you remind yourself that things will get better over time and there will be no need to rush things. "Someday I won't be afraid of my head/ Someday I will not be chained to my bed/ Someday I'll forget the day he left/ But surely not today," she sings over the lighthearted melodies.

In an interview with Zane Lowe of Beats 1, Alessia revealed that "Not Today" was "one of the last songs I actually wrote for the record." She said, "Something happened to me that made me write a lot of new songs. I went through the end of a relationship, and just really, really bad terms. So the song to me was like that grieving period in the middle of healing, I guess, or the moment or the period of time before you actually get to the healing stage."

"There's a stage that we don't often talk about a lot or try to rush through, which is not very good, where you need to kind of grieve whatever you lost or whatever's going on and you have just go through the period where you feel miserable and that's what this song is about," she continued saying of the song.

She added, "It's about like in between phase and reminding myself that things do get better, of course, but it's okay to just say, 'You know what, not today. Today I need to be in bed. I need to be sad and just throw myself a pity party.' "

"The Pains of Growing", the follow-up to her debut album "Know-It-All", will be released on November 30.
