AceShowbiz - "Lilo & Stitch" is the next Disney movie to get a live-action treatment. A remake of the 2002 animated movie is currently in development at the studio, with Mike Van Waes tapped to write the script, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback are on board to serve as producers. They have teamed up with Disney for the upcoming live-action remake of "Aladdin". No other details about the "Lilo & Stitch" live-action movie are available now.

The 2002 animated comedy centers its story on the bond between a lonely human girl named Lilo and a dog-like alien named Stitch, who is genetically engineered by his creator to cause chaos and destruction. It was written and directed by Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders, the latter of whom also voiced Stitch.

While it was not a massive box office hit, grossing only $273.1 million worldwide, it received generally positive reviews and was nominated for the 2002 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. The movie has spawned several direct-to-video sequels as well as several television series.

Disney has already had several live-action remakes on the plate, including Tim Burton's "Dumbo", Guy Ritchie's "Aladdin", Jon Favreau's "The Lion King (2019)" and Niki Caro's "Mulan". The number continues to grow following the studio's success with such live-action movies as "The Jungle Book" (2016) and "Beauty and the Beast (2017)".

It's still unknown if the live-action remake of "Lilo & Stitch" will be getting a theatrical release or launch on Disney's upcoming streaming service. Disney has planned "Lady and the Tramp" live-action remake for a release on the streaming service sometime in 2019. Justin Theroux and Tessa Thompson are starring in the re-imagining of the 1955 Disney classic, with Charlie Bean serving behind the lens.
