AceShowbiz - Walt Disney Studios has announced that "Lilo & Stitch" will be released exclusively in theaters on May 23, 2025. The announcement comes alongside a brief teaser that showcases the film's computer-generated version of Stitch running through the frame. This marks the second major release date set for Disney's 2025 season, with "Freakier Friday" (the sequel to "Freaky Friday") set to premiere on August 8, 2025.
The live-action "Lilo & Stitch" has been in development for several years and was initially intended for exclusive release on Disney+. However, it has since been slated for a theatrical debut. The first official footage of the live-action Stitch was unveiled at August's D23 Expo, sparking a wide range of reactions to its photorealistic interpretation of the iconic alien character.
The cast of the live-action adaptation includes original franchise co-creator Chris Sanders returning as the voice of Stitch, along with new cast members such as Maia Kealoha as Lilo Pelekai, Sydney Agudong as Nani Pelekai, Kaipo Dudoit as David Kawena, Courtney B. Vance as Cobra Bubbles, Zach Galifianakis as Dr. Jumba Jookiba, and Billy Magnussen as Agent Pleakley. Tia Carrere and Jason Scott Lee, who voiced Nani and David in the original animated film, will also return in new roles.
"Lilo & Stitch" follows the heartwarming bond between a lonely human girl named Lilo and a dog-like alien named Stitch, who was genetically engineered to be a force of destruction. Despite the chaos caused by nosy social workers and pursuing aliens, Lilo and Stitch find solace in their shared sense of family. The live-action adaptation is directed by Dean Fleischer Camp ("Marcel the Shell with Shoes On") and features a script by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright. Dan Lin, Jonathan Eirich, and Ryan Halprin serve as producers.
