The Academy Award winner plays the first astronaut who joins the expedition to the red planet on Hulu's new series.

In the first scene of the teaser, Sean Penn's character Tom Hagerty is seen looking up to the sky. As the next scenes show many stunning views such as North Pole aurora, birds murmuration in an evening sky and the sun's movements, the Academy Award winner can be heard narrating, "Colors you've never seen before and lights moving all around you, the universe."

The footage then shows a group of astronauts walking towards a plane as people give them a standing ovation. "Every human being who ever was lived out their lives...on a mound of dust suspended in a sunbeam," Hagerty says. Near the end of the teaser, Hagerty is seen in a flying rocket wearing his spacesuit. After the scene switches to Penn's close-up face, a woman's voice comes up, saying, "Any time people venture into the unknown, there is a cost."

"The First" will be Penn's first major role on television series. Willimon admitted that he admired Penn's talent and he's lucky to be able to work with the "I Am Sam" star in this project. "I have such deep admiration for Sean's immense talent and extraordinary body of work," he said in a statement. "I feel very lucky to be collaborating with an artist of his caliber."

LisaGay Hamilton, Hannah Ware, Keiko Agena, Natascha McElhone Rey Lucas, James Ransone, Anna Jacoby-Heron, Melissa George, Kofi Boakye, Brian Lee Franklin and Oded Fehr also star on the upcoming drama series.

Westward Productions will produce the series while Willimon and Jordan Tappis serve as the executive producers. Hulu, Channel 4, AG studios and IMG are financing the project. The eight-episode first season is set to be released on September 14 on Hulu.
