The death of the famous canine is mourned by some celebrities, including his 'Water for Elephants' co-star Reese Witherspoon.

AceShowbiz - After leaving his mark on Hollywood, Uggie the famous dog from "The Artist" died at the age of 13. His owner Omar von Muller delivered the sad news via Facebook, saying the Jack Russell was put to sleep on Friday, August 7 in Los Angeles.

"We regret to inform to all our friends, family and Uggie's fans that our beloved boy has passed away," Muller wrote. "In short, Uggie had a cancerous tumor in the prostate and is now in a better place not feeling pain. Thank you for your support, I will not be reading any comments for a while as it is too painful at the moment."

Uggie played Jack in the Oscar-winning movie and was later featured in "Water for Elephants". Reese Witherspoon, star of the latter film, paid a tribute to the dog on Instagram. "RIP to my canine friend Uggie," she wrote. "I worked with him on Water for Elephants. What a special, sweet soul."

Uggie retired from Hollywood three years ago and was awarded with a Hollywood Walk of Fame star. "He is getting older and I wouldn't want to put him through long hours like on this movie," Omar said at that time. "He was on the set doing very long hours for a couple of months. If we get other jobs, he will go on. But not if the jobs are so intense."
