Alfonso Herrera has been cast in the role of Kyle, an adaptation of the role played by John Travolta in the 1980 movie.

AceShowbiz - FOX's "Urban Cowboy" has cast "Sense8" star Alfonso Herrera as its male lead. The Mexican actor will play Kyle in the pilot, which is adapted from the 1980 movie of the same title starring John Travolta and Debra Winger.

According to Deadline, Kyle "is an extremely popular rodeo circuit rider who is a puppet for the drug cartel, forced to flee Mexico after ticking off the wrong people. Now, with a price on his head, he and his sister make their way to Houston, given sanctuary by his Uncle Al, also an illegal immigrant who has made a life for himself in the United States."

Kyle is now living his life as "a cosmopolitan, modern guy who has drank the best tequila, danced at the hottest clubs in Mexico and he still has a lot of play left in him, but knows it's time to forge a new future, find new dreams."

The story will center on star-crossed young lovers Kyle and Gaby, which is yet to be cast, as they pursue their dreams and passions through the sweat of line dancing in honky tonks, the grime of the oil refineries and the glamour of modern Texas. It's about family legacies, starting over, finding true love and the American dream.

Like the original work, the upcoming project will have a strong presence of music, this time with a Latin flavor instead of a country music like in the movie. Craig Brewer is on board to write and direct the pilot. Should FOX give "Urban Cowboy" a series order, it is expected to premiere in midseason.

Herrera is a well-known actor in Latin America. He has starred in a number of popular telenovelas and movies in his native Mexico. His role as Hernando on Netflix's "Sense8" marks his American acting debut.
