August 1925. When his cousin dies, Bertie becomes a Marquess; Robert is delighted, as this makes him most suitable for Edith. However, she is still unable to tell him that Marigold is her daughter. When Mary spitefully reveals it, Bertie walks out, saying he cannot trust Edith. Edith goes to London, where she and her editor are startled to discover that the magazine's agony aunt (advice columnist), believed to be female, is in fact Spratt, the butler. When it is revealed that the first couple to stay at the B&B were adulterers, Mrs Patmore fears it will be labeled a house of ill repute, and finds bookings are being cancelled. To show support -- and despite Carson's objection to the family getting involved -- Rosamund, Cora, and Robert go there for tea, bring a newspaper photographer to record their visit. Molesley starts to teach at the school, and holds the children's interest by telling them to keep learning, whatever their future. Thomas attempts suicide by slashing his wrists in the bath, but is saved by Andy, Baxter, and Mrs Hughes.
Mary is still confused over her romantic feelings for Henry; Tom challenges her, and argues that she loves him. Henry calls again, saying that lack of money has caused her to reject him, and leaves again. Tom challenges Mary over her negative attitude, and gets Violet back from France to have a heart-to-heart with Mary. Mary reveals she fears that Henry will die in a car crash, like Matthew. Violet makes her realize that she does really love him. Henry is invited back, and Mary agrees to marry him; she visits Matthew's grave to tell him what she is doing. Luckily, Henry already has a marriage license, so they marry quickly in the village church. Mary and Edith have a talk, and make up to a great extent -- acknowledging that they will always be sisters.
