AceShowbiz - Laura Linney is set to join the cast of HBO’s highly anticipated superhero drama Lanterns, the network announced in a new teaser released on Monday. The trailer features Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart reassuring Linney’s character with the line, "I was raised fearless, and I'll do this better than he's ever done it before." Linney’s character responds, "Then go and get it, John Stewart."
Lanterns is scheduled to premiere on Sunday, August 16, on HBO. It stars Pierre as John Stewart, a new Green Lantern who replaces Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan. Using a mystical ring that grants superpowers, John and Hal are drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in America’s heartland. The supporting cast includes Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, and Nathan Fillion, who returns as Guy Gardner, another Green Lantern previously seen in Superman.
Laura Linney is renowned for her roles in films such as The Truman Show and Love, Actually, and she has earned three Oscar nominations. On television, she won an Emmy for the Showtime series The Big C and starred alongside Jason Bateman in Netflix’s Ozark.
In other casting developments, Netflix’s Virgin River is welcoming Mitchell Slaggert to its upcoming eighth season, with Slaggert joining as the charismatic EMT Eddie, according to Deadline. This marks a significant recurring role for the actor who previously appeared in Landman.
The FX series The Lowdown has added Martha Plimpton and Clifton Collins Jr. for its second season, as reported by Variety. Specific details about their characters have not yet been released.

In streaming news, Danielle Brooks is set to lead a new Apple TV comedy based on the life of restaurateur Melba Wilson. Brooks will portray Melba, the owner of a renowned Harlem soul food restaurant, according to Deadline.
Ella Rubin will appear in the Netflix drama The God of the Woods, joining leads Maya Hawke and Kerry Condon. Rubin plays Louise, a camp counselor in the series.
Lastly, Rob Delaney has been cast in Elizabeth Banks’ untitled Apple TV comedy, where Banks stars as a divorced mother who helps coordinate her elderly father’s romantic life at his retirement community. This casting was also announced via Deadline.
