AceShowbiz - Before the eagerly awaited fifth and reportedly final season of The Bear arrives, Hulu released an unexpected flashback episode spotlighting fan-favorite characters played by Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Jon Bernthal. This special installment, titled Gary, dives into the complicated relationship between Richie and Mikey, providing fresh emotional insight into their backstory and mental states.
Ebon Moss-Bachrach shared his excitement about the episode on Instagram on May 5, writing, “COUSINS! PRIMOS! CUGINI!!! Get ready for GARY!!!! We are so excited to finally share this little adventure with Richie and Mikey.” He noted that the episode was co-written by himself and Jon Bernthal, and directed by Christopher Storer, the creator of The Bear. Moss-Bachrach expressed gratitude to the communities of Gary, Indiana, where the episode was filmed, and Chicago, Illinois, where the show is set.
The Bear originally premiered in 2022 and centers on Carmy (Jeremy Allen White), a gifted chef who returns to Chicago after his brother Mikey’s death to take over their family’s sandwich shop, The Beef. Together with the staff, Carmy transforms the struggling restaurant into The Bear, a place marked by innovation and emotional complexity.
Set before the events of the main series, the Gary episode sheds light on Mikey’s mindset prior to his death and reveals how his struggles influenced Richie’s behavior following the tragedy. This exploration adds layers to the characters’ dynamics and reframes their story from the very beginning of the series.
According to FX’s official synopsis, Gary focuses on the “complicated relationship” between Mikey and Richie, uncovering new aspects of Mikey’s mental state. It also provides crucial context to better understand Richie’s character as introduced in season 1. The title references the episode’s filming location in Gary, Indiana.
The one-hour special also features guest appearances from Gillian Jacobs, Marin Ireland, and others, expanding the episode’s emotional scope. Fans of The Bear can watch Gary as a standalone episode on Hulu, where it is listed separately from the regular seasons.
At the end of the surprise episode, viewers see a brief scene set in the present day that hints at unfolding events in season 5. During a rainy day, Richie reflects on his friendship and a road trip with Mikey shortly before Mikey’s death. Distracted behind the wheel, Richie is startled by a honking car behind him and then appears to be involved in a potentially dangerous accident, leaving audiences with a tense cliffhanger.
Regarding the upcoming fifth season, no official release date has been announced by FX, but the show is expected to return sometime in June. Jamie Lee Curtis, who plays the matriarch Donna in the series, recently hinted at the conclusion of the show by posting photos of wrapping production. In February, Curtis wrote on Instagram, “FINISHED STRONG! Surrounded by an extraordinary crew and group of writers and producers and scene partners on the show that Chris Storer created, completing the story of this extraordinary family that we have all fallen in love with.”
Curtis also confirmed that she filmed her final scenes alongside Abby Elliott, who portrays her onscreen daughter, fueling speculation that season 5 will be the series’ last. This aligns with the emotional tone of the Gary episode and the narrative arc suggested by the teaser cliffhanger.
The Bear continues to captivate audiences with its authentic depiction of the food industry and deeply human storytelling. The surprise Gary episode enriches the series by offering a poignant glimpse into the past struggles of key characters, setting the stage for an anticipated and dramatic final season.
