2026 Tony nods: The Lost Boys & Schmigadoon! lead Best Musical race against Two Strangers and Titaníque.
- May 6, 2026
AceShowbiz - The 2026 Tony Award nominations were revealed on Tuesday, May 5, highlighting two standout musicals, The Lost Boys: A New Musical and Schmigadoon!, as the top contenders. Both shows received nominations for Best Musical and dominated the field alongside other notable productions.
The Lost Boys: A New Musical is a stage adaptation of the 1987 cult classic comedy horror film The Lost Boys, bringing fresh life to the beloved story through song and performance. Meanwhile, Schmigadoon! draws inspiration from the first season of the popular 2021 musical TV series of the same name, translating its unique charm from screen to stage.
These two musicals will face competition for the coveted Best Musical Tony against Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York), which led the overall nominations with 11 nods, and Titaníque, which garnered four nominations in total.
In the Best Revival of a Musical category, the contenders are Cats: The Jellicle Ball, Ragtime, and The Rocky Horror Show. This marks a return to the stage for some iconic shows: the original Cats production famously won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, back in 1983. Ragtime earned 13 nominations in 1998, with a 2010 revival also receiving six nods. The Rocky Horror Show has a long history of Tony recognition, with its original production earning one nomination in 1975 and a revival scoring four nominations in 2001.
A notable nomination in the Best Original Score category went to indie pop/rock band The Rescues for their work on The Lost Boys: A New Musical. It's relatively rare for musical groups or duos to be nominated in this category, though it does happen occasionally. For instance, two years ago, the folk duo The Jamestown Revival was nominated for co-writing the score of The Outsiders.
Other nominees in the Best Original Score category, which includes both musicals and plays, are Caroline Shaw for Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman; Steve Bargonetti for August Wilson’s Joe Turner’s Come and Gone; Cinco Paul for Schmigadoon!; and Jim Barne alongside Kit Buchan for Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York).
Some big names in Broadway and music were notably absent from the nominations. Stephen Schwartz, a respected Broadway composer who has yet to win a Tony Award in competition, was passed over for his score for The Queen of Versailles. Similarly, legendary songwriter Mike Stoller, who co-wrote Beaches with lyricist Iris Rainer, also missed out on a nomination.
In the acting categories, Rose Byrne received a Tony nomination for Best Actress in a Play for her role in Fallen Angels. Byrne was also recognized this year with an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her performance in If I Had Legs I'd Kick You. Meanwhile, Lea Michele was passed over for what would have been her first Tony nomination for her lead role in Chess. Michele, however, has earned Primetime Emmy and Grammy nominations for her breakout role in Glee.
The 2026 Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre will be presented to three distinguished figures: André Bishop, who served as the artistic director of Lincoln Center Theater from 1992 to 2025; renowned lighting designer Jules Fisher; and celebrated playwright and director James Lapine.
Jules Fisher's influence extends beyond theater, having crafted lighting designs for major music artists such as David Bowie, Kiss, Parliament-Funkadelic, Whitney Houston, The Rolling Stones, Neil Young, and Simon and Garfunkel.
This year’s Tony Awards ceremony will return to the iconic Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Sunday, June 7. The event will be hosted by pop superstar P!nk, marking her as the biggest pop star ever to host the show. The ceremony will be broadcast live on CBS and available for streaming on Paramount+ from 8 to 11 p.m. ET.
The Tony Awards are produced in partnership by Tony Award Productions, a collaboration between the American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League. Executive producers Raj Kapoor, Sarah Levine Hall, and Jack Sussman lead this year’s production, with Kapoor and Levine Hall also serving as co-showrunners. Patrick Menton and Rob Paine are co-executive producers, with Menton additionally acting as head of talent.
The full list of 2026 Tony Award nominations includes musicals first, followed by plays, and concludes with a comprehensive ranking of all productions that received one or more nominations, ordered by the number of nods from highest to lowest.
