Jason Biggs reveals his biggest career regret: turning down the lead role of Ted Mosby on How I Met Your Mother.

AceShowbiz - Jason Biggs has openly discussed one of his biggest career regrets: passing on the lead role in the popular CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother. In a revealing 2021 interview with SiriusXM, Biggs shared that he was originally offered the part of Ted Mosby, a role that eventually went to Josh Radnor. Reflecting on the decision, he said it was probably his “biggest regret” in terms of missed opportunities.
At the time of the offer, Biggs admitted he was uncertain about committing to television. He explained, “Do I want to do TV? I don’t know that I was quite ready to go that route.” This hesitation stemmed partly from the lingering stigma he perceived between film actors and TV actors, a divide that influenced many performers’ career choices in the early 2000s.
In a more recent conversation on Neal Brennan’s podcast Blocks, Biggs elaborated on his mindset during that period, describing his decision to pass on TV roles as “f****** idiotic” in hindsight. He acknowledged that his ego and the old-fashioned notion of film being superior to television played significant roles in his choices.
During the mid-2000s, when How I Met Your Mother premiered in 2005, Biggs was appearing in movies such as Woody Allen’s Anything Else (2003) and Kevin Smith’s Jersey Girl (2004). Though he considers himself fortunate overall, he admitted that if given a chance to redo his career path, accepting the role of Ted Mosby would be a top priority.
On the podcast, Biggs also discussed how his career was heavily tied to the success of the American Pie franchise. He admitted to relying on those films to maintain both his income and his confidence, saying, “I kept having ‘American Pie’ to sort of not only feed myself with food…but also feed my ego.” However, he recognized that this dependence began to limit his growth as an actor.
Eventually, Biggs did transition to television, assuming that it would be an easier path. His early TV projects, including the short-lived series Mad Love, did not meet his expectations. His fortunes changed notably when he landed a recurring role on Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black, which became his most important television work to date.
Looking back, Biggs remains grateful for his career but openly regrets the missed opportunity that could have drastically altered his trajectory. His story highlights how perceptions of television versus film have evolved, and how even successful actors can wrestle with tough career decisions.
