AceShowbiz - The Road Home is an upcoming film project produced by Studiocanal in partnership with Flora Films, featuring a compelling cast including Cynthia Erivo, South African talent Thabo Rametsi, and Guy Pearce. The movie is directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Bill Condon, known for Gods and Monsters, and is based on an original screenplay by Michael Bronner, who also co-developed the story alongside Zakes Mda.
The narrative centers on trumpeter Hugh Masekela, portrayed by Rametsi, who is exiled from South Africa during the apartheid era. Caught between conflicting loyalties, Masekela faces tension when the anti-apartheid movement, led by his mentor Archbishop Trevor Huddleston (played by Pearce), initiates a boycott against Paul Simon for his album Graceland. The boycott alleges that Simon violated the United Nations’ Cultural Boycott by incorporating township music into his work.
Breaking away from his mentor’s stance, Masekela embraces music as a tool for resistance and teams up with fellow exile and acclaimed singer Miriam “Mama Africa” Makeba, brought to life by Erivo. Together, they form the supergroup Graceland, a powerful ensemble aimed at amplifying South Africa’s musical voice globally. The film features the iconic music of Masekela, Makeba, and Simon, bringing an authentic soundtrack to this politically charged story.
The Road Home promises to deliver a rich portrayal of South African history through the lens of music and activism, spotlighting the personal and political struggles of its characters amid the apartheid struggle.
