AceShowbiz - Viewers are set to experience a fresh and gritty take on the Green Lantern mythos with the upcoming TV series Lanterns, slated to premiere on HBO Max in August 2026. This new show introduces a darker, more mature tone reminiscent of acclaimed crime dramas like True Detective, promising a blend of superhero action and intense mystery storytelling.
The series stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, two members of the elite Green Lantern Corps on a training mission on Earth. The teaser reveals the duo driving along a remote highway, with Stewart growing frustrated over his prolonged training period without yet receiving his power ring. Jordan, a seasoned Lantern, dismisses him as "a f***ing substitute teacher" but remains open to giving him a chance. The tension escalates when Jordan dramatically escapes a car accident by rolling out of the vehicle just before it plunges off an embankment.
As the story unfolds, the pair become embroiled in a small-town murder investigation. The teaser provides glimpses of their powers and Jordan’s iconic costume, while Jordan asserts he is the only human Green Lantern—an assertion that might surprise fans of Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner, who appeared in last year’s Superman and is confirmed to join Lanterns. The teaser also humorously references Ch’p, a squirrel-like alien member of the Corps, with Jordan calling one of them "a f***ing squirrel."
Lanterns is the brainchild of acclaimed creators Chris Mundy (True Detective), Damon Lindelof (Watchmen), and comics writer Tom King (Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow). The series focuses on Hal Jordan and John Stewart as they navigate the complexities of a murder mystery, aided by local sheriff Kerry, played by Kelly Macdonald (Boardwalk Empire). The investigation involves a cast of intriguing characters portrayed by Garrett Dillahunt (Deadwood), Poorna Jagannathan (The Night Of), Jason Ritter (Matlock), and Paul Ben-Victor (The Wire).
The show promises to dive deep into the Green Lantern lore, featuring at least one major antagonist from the comics: Sinestro. Played by Ulrich Thomsen (Banshee), Sinestro is portrayed as a former mentor to Hal Jordan who ultimately turns rogue and emerges as a formidable galactic threat. Additionally, Guy Gardner will make an appearance, adding further depth and complexity to the Corps’ dynamic.
Similar to the DC series Peacemaker, Lanterns will adopt an R-rating, ensuring a mature, unfiltered approach that tackles darker themes and more intense action sequences. This tone aligns with the show’s focus on the Green Lantern Corps, a spacefaring group of intergalactic peacekeepers equipped with power rings fueled by their bearers’ willpower. These rings allow users to create constructs of green energy limited only by their imagination and strength of will.
The Green Lantern universe, originally created by John Broome and Gil Kane in 1959’s Showcase #22, has evolved over decades. John Stewart, introduced later by Denny O’Neil and Neal Adams in 1971’s Green Lantern #87, brings a significant cultural and narrative expansion to the legacy. Lanterns aims to explore this rich mythology while weaving in noir-inspired storytelling that highlights character depth and psychological intrigue.
With its talented cast, experienced creators, and a fresh narrative style, Lanterns is poised to redefine Green Lantern for a new generation. Fans can anticipate a series that balances superhero spectacle with a compelling, adult-oriented mystery.
While the official premiere is set for August 2026 on HBO Max, an exact release date has yet to be announced. Stay tuned for further updates and exclusive insights as the series moves closer to launch.
