AceShowbiz - The first teaser for Lanterns, HBO's new series based on the DC Comics Green Lantern characters, offers a grounded and intriguing look at the show's tone and character dynamics. Rather than focusing heavily on superhero action, the teaser presents a more atmospheric, Earth-centered narrative reminiscent of HBO's True Detective.
Co-creators and writers Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King have consistently emphasized that the series will be rooted on Earth, steering towards a crime and mystery focus rather than cosmic battles. The two-minute preview opens with a brief shot of Kyle Chandler's Hal Jordan taking flight and shows a worn Green Lantern suit, but the prevailing mood is more of a Southwestern murder investigation than an interstellar saga.
The teaser quickly dives into the show's lore with a scene between Hal Jordan and new recruit John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre. Stewart complains that after two months of training, he still hasn’t been entrusted with the iconic Green Lantern ring. Jordan advises him not to get caught up in the symbolism of the ring, telling him, "You're just a substitute teacher. You're not ready to get up in front of the class till the ring says you are." This exchange respects the traditional Green Lantern canon, where the rings select their bearers.
Later, Stewart questions Jordan about other Green Lantern Corps members. Jordan responds that he is the only human among them, adding with a touch of humor that one of the other Lanterns is "a fuckin' squirrel." This moment reinforces the show’s connection to the broader mythology, even while keeping the focus on Earth-based characters.
Between these exchanges, the teaser hints at a central plot involving a murder investigation in the American heartland, a storyline that brings tension between Jordan and Stewart as the latter grows frustrated with Jordan’s reluctance to step aside. The teaser also introduces Kelly Macdonald as a local police officer working the murder case. Additional cast members include Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, and Ulrich Thomsen, who round out the ensemble.
HBO has announced that Lanterns will debut in August. The series is produced by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television, with Chris Mundy serving as showrunner. Executive producers include Damon Lindelof, Tom King, DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, as well as Ron Schmidt and James Hawes, the latter directing the first two episodes. Other directors attached to the series include Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov.
This teaser sets the stage for a fresh take on the Green Lantern mythos, blending superhero elements with a gritty crime drama style that promises to explore character conflicts and complex storytelling in the months ahead.
