AceShowbiz - Southern Bastards is set to feature Tim McGraw in a significant acting role, as announced by Deadline. The upcoming Hulu series adapts the acclaimed graphic novel series created by Jason Aaron and Jason Latour.
Tim McGraw will portray Coach Boss, the influential head coach of the Craw County High School football team in a small Alabama town. The show explores how football dominates the community, with Coach Boss wielding substantial power and control over the town’s affairs. This role marks a darker turn for McGraw, whose character appears to have a more menacing side compared to his previous football-related roles.
Previously, McGraw has been involved in sports-themed projects such as the films 2004’s Friday Night Lights and 2009’s The Blind Side. However, in Southern Bastards, his character’s influence extends beyond the football field into more sinister territory.
The series also stars Kevin Bacon as Earl, the son of a prominent local sheriff. Earl harbors resentment toward Coach Boss because of circumstances tied to his father’s death. Erin Kellyman plays Roberta, a former marine who arrives in Craw County with the aim of breaking a cycle of family trauma. During her journey, she uncovers Coach Boss’s involvement in an organized crime operation.
Southern Bastards the graphic novel series has received critical acclaim, winning the 2015 Harvey Award for Best New Series and the 2016 Eisner Award for Best Continuing Series. This recognition sets high expectations for the Hulu adaptation.
Beyond his sports-related roles, McGraw is also known for his performances in television and film projects such as 1883, Yellowstone, and Tomorrowland. Outside of acting, he recently received news of his induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame, scheduled for later this year.
In addition to his work in entertainment, McGraw is preparing to launch his Pawn Shop Guitar Tour in July, where he will headline alongside artists including The Chicks, 49 Winchester, Timothy Wayne, and Lady A.
With Southern Bastards, Tim McGraw is returning to a narrative centered on football but in a more complex and darker setting, promising a fresh chapter in his acting career as the series prepares for its debut on Hulu.
