AceShowbiz - Southern Bastards is set to feature Kevin Bacon in the lead role for Hulu’s upcoming drama pilot. The series is adapted from the graphic novel created by Jason Aaron and Jason LaTour. This project is a collaboration between Disney's Onyx Collective, POV Entertainment, and Ryan Coogler’s Proximity Media alongside Fifth Season.
The pilot will be directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, known for his work on King Richard and We Own This City. The story centers on a determined military veteran who returns to Craw County, Alabama, to find her estranged father. Instead, she uncovers a dangerous web of organized crime led by the region’s most successful high school football coach.
Bill Dubuque (Ozark) and Nia DaCosta (Hedda, Candyman) received story credit on the pilot, with Dubuque also writing the teleplay. Showrunner duties will be handled by Matt Olmstead, known for his work on NBC’s Chicago franchise.
Bacon will portray Earl, the son of the legendary Sheriff Bert of Craw County. Earl is characterized as a tough yet humble Army veteran eager to reconnect with his daughter, unafraid to challenge the status quo in his hometown.
The executive producing team includes Dubuque, DaCosta, Olmstead, Green, Aaron, LaTour, and representatives from POV Entertainment and Proximity Media. Layne Eskridge, Ryan Coogler, Sev Ohanian, and Zinzi Coogler serve as executive producers, with Simone Harris and Kate Barry as co-executive producers. Creative oversight will be provided by Hannah Baker and D'Angelo Louis from Proximity Media.
Recently, Bacon starred in the horror comedy Family Movie, which he also directed and premiered at SXSW last month. His other recent projects include Netflix’s Sirens and Prime Video’s The Bondsman. He is represented by MGMT, Johnson Shapiro, and Viewpoint.
Green’s directing portfolio also features Bob Marley: One Love, Top Boy, and the upcoming Disney+ special The Punisher: One Last Kill. He is represented by WME, Granderson des Rochers, and ID.
Southern Bastards promises a gripping drama that explores family tensions and deep-rooted crime in the American South, anchored by a strong cast and creative team. Fans of the graphic novel and dramatic storytelling will be eager to see how this story is brought to life on Hulu.
