AceShowbiz - Sky Ferreira sparked a discussion on social media after responding to a fan’s comment questioning her source of income. On Saturday, April 4, the singer engaged with a fan on Instagram who had reposted her 2012 music video for “Everything Is Embarrassing” and asked, “i wonder what's her form of income.”
Ferreira replied on Instagram, addressing the fan’s doubts directly: "Someone sent me your X account. I toured for years. I work. I hate to break it to you, but your favorite artist records my old songs. I hope that answers your question. Xoxoxo"
This interaction escalated when the same user posted on X (formerly Twitter) a screenshot of a text conversation with an alleged "industry insider." The insider claimed that two tracks on Charli XCX's Wuthering Heights album were allegedly "ripped" from Ferreira’s demos dating back to 2018 and 2015. Ferreira responded to this accusation in the Instagram comments, stating, "Your industry 'insider' is wrong. Close but wrong...It isn't worth the trouble bc I know how the world works."
Importantly, Ferreira is officially credited as a featured artist, co-writer, and vocal producer on the Wuthering Heights track titled "Eyes of the World." Despite the controversy, she expressed mixed feelings about the situation, writing, "I wasn't going to say anything...It brought back a lot of things I have worked really hard to move past."
Charli XCX has not publicly responded to the claims. According to her management, she is currently in Kyoto working on filming a movie and completing her upcoming studio album.
When Billboard reached out for a statement, Charli XCX’s team provided a detailed response clarifying the crediting process on the Wuthering Heights album. They highlighted Charli XCX’s extensive career, which includes seven albums, four mixtapes, one EP, and numerous songwriting credits for other artists.
The statement emphasized that Charli XCX began her career as a songwriter with tracks like "I Love It," and has always maintained a fair and transparent approach to crediting collaborators. Her management explained that before the release of Wuthering Heights, a thorough review was conducted on several tracks, including materials derived from earlier sessions.
This review process involved managers, legal teams, artists, and producers, and incorporated archival materials and demo recordings. According to the statement, “All relevant parties were consulted throughout, and the album was played in full in advance of release to everyone.” Songwriting credits and splits were determined and agreed upon collectively in writing, with clear reference to documented timelines and contributions.
Furthermore, the management team affirmed that “All credits were finalized and formally approved by the appropriate parties prior to the album’s release,” addressing any concerns about possible improper credit attribution.
Billboard has also reached out to Sky Ferreira for further comment on the matter.
This exchange highlights ongoing complexities in the music industry surrounding songwriting credits, collaborations, and recognition. It also underscores the importance of clear communication and documented agreements in creative partnerships.
As the situation develops, fans and industry observers await any further responses from both artists involved.
