AceShowbiz - The Bride starring Christian Bale is preparing for its digital release following a challenging theatrical run. The R-rated sci-fi horror film will be available for purchase on major digital platforms including Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home starting April 7, 2026. Physical copies on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD will follow on May 19, 2026.
The home releases will be packed with special features designed to give fans a deeper look into the film’s creation. Among these extras are Stitching Together The Bride, which includes exclusive footage and interviews; Designing the Look, featuring makeup tests and behind-the-scenes content; The Muse and the Reimagined Monster; and The Bride! Party, showcasing cast interviews. These features highlight the film’s creative process and the efforts behind its unique aesthetic.
Inspired by the classic Bride of Frankenstein, The Bride follows a monster’s quest to find Dr. Euphronious in Chicago to request a companion. The doctor revives a murdered woman, transforming her into the titular Bride. This dark narrative explores themes of identity and creation, all wrapped in a sci-fi horror setting. Rated R for violence, nudity, and language, the film marks the second feature-length directorial and writing effort by Maggie Gyllenhaal, who previously earned critical acclaim and award nominations for The Lost Daughter.
Gyllenhaal is recognized for her acting roles in films and TV series such as Adaptation, Secretary, The Honourable Woman, and The Deuce. For The Bride, she assembled an ensemble cast that includes Christian Bale, Jessie Buckley, Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Penélope Cruz. Several cast members are award-winning actors; notably, Buckley recently received an Oscar, Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Critics’ Choice Award for her performance in Hamnet. Meanwhile, Bale is known for his roles in blockbuster hits like Batman Begins, The Dark Knight trilogy, Ford v Ferrari, and Thor: Love and Thunder, as well as an Oscar-winning turn in The Fighter.
Despite the star-studded lineup and creative ambition, The Bride received mixed critical reception, contrasting sharply with the praise for The Lost Daughter. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 58% critic score, falling short of a Fresh rating. Critics commended the cast’s performances but criticized the movie itself for its lack of cohesion and for feeling like a disjointed experiment without a clear, unified vision.
Audiences were somewhat more favorable, with the Popcornmeter audience score at 70%. However, the film’s box office performance was underwhelming. Released in early March 2026, The Bride grossed approximately $23 million worldwide against an estimated production budget between $80 million and $90 million. When accounting for marketing and distribution costs, Warner Bros. is reportedly facing a loss of around $90 million on the project.
Following its theatrical run, the upcoming digital and physical releases represent an opportunity for viewers to revisit The Bride and explore its creative elements through the included bonus materials. The digital launch on April 7 and physical release on May 19 will offer fans the chance to own the film and experience the director’s vision more intimately.
Produced by Warner Bros., The Bride runs 126 minutes and blends horror with science fiction and romance elements. The film’s production team also includes producers Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Osnat Handelsman-Keren, Talia Kleinhendler, and Maggie Gyllenhaal herself, with executive producers Andrew Lary, Anthony Tittanegro, Carla Raij, Courtney Kivowitz, David Webb, and Pete Chiappetta supporting the project.
Despite its commercial challenges, The Bride remains a notable entry in the 2026 film slate for its ambition and the involvement of high-profile talent both in front of and behind the camera. Fans of sci-fi horror and those interested in The Bride’s unique take on a classic monster tale will soon have multiple options to access the film at home.
